On June 22 and 23, the M²OLIE team – comprising representatives from academia, clinical practice, and industry – met at the Schmerlenbach Conference Center for an intensive two – day exchange. Following an official welcome by Prof. Stefan Schönberg (Steering Committee) and Prof. Patrick Maier (M²OLIE Administration Office), Dr. Anna Simeonova (Product Owner) and Michael Sternberg (M²OLIE Administration Office) presented the clinical and research track at the Research Campus and outlined the roadmap for the coming year. Prof. Frank Giordano (Steering Committee) then led a critical discussion on the results of the functional test conducted on June 15, 2026, before the Siemens Varian team presented a guest talk on process management at the clinic. This was followed by status reports on medical devices and innovation platforms at the Research Campus, as well as an update on M²OLIE’s business plan. The evening ended, as is tradition, with a convivial barbecue and an interactive “M²OLIE Table Quiz,” where participants had the chance to win attractive prizes. The second day began with a keynote presentation by Dr. Sandra Fernau (Heidelberg Research Service) on collaborative projects and third – party funding. Prof. Giordano then moderated a discussion on the long – term sustainability of M²OLIE’s research, followed by small –group workshops on four topics, during which specific project and grant proposal ideas were developed. The teams concluded by presenting their results, and the retreat ended productively with an overview of the next steps for sustaining the Research Campus.
The retreat impressively demonstrated that M²OLIE not only possesses strong technical expertise but also creates innovative solutions for clinical process optimization through open dialogue and close collaboration. A heartfelt thank you to all speakers, moderators, and participants!
