From Standard to Adaptive Radiation Therapy: How the M²OLIE Research Campus Is Accelerating Personalized Cancer Treatment

For over ten years, the M²OLIE Research Campus has brought together clinical practice, academia, and industry on a single campus. Within this “Industry-on-Campus” structure, the partners have translated AI-supported adaptive radiation therapy directly from research into everyday clinical practice and further developed it through industrial partnerships, ensuring that modern medical technology reaches patients more quickly.

At the M²OLIE Research Campus, the vision of making radiation therapy for people with cancer more precise and personalized emerged early on. The primary focus is on how treatment can be better tailored to a patient’s individual situation. Long-term funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFTR) as part of the Research Campus Initiative has made it possible to permanently bring together experts from medicine, the natural sciences, engineering, computer science, business administration, academia, and industry on the campus of Mannheim University Medical Center. From the outset, radiation therapy was viewed as an integral component of the “M²OLIE One-Stop-Shop,” which aims to integrate modern imaging, automated procedures, and advanced analytics into a seamless, time-optimized patient pathway.
